What is Negative Thinking?

Negative thinking refers to a pattern of thinking in which an individual, more often than not, focuses on, dwells upon, or expects unfavorable outcomes or aspects of situations.

It involves interpreting events, situations, and oneself in a pessimistic and often self-deprecating manner.

Negative thinking can take various forms.

  • Negative Self-talk: Do you engage in critical/harsh internal dialogue to the extent that it routinely undermines your abilities, self-worth, or potential for success?
  • Personalization: Do you feel responsible for negative events/outcomes that are beyond your control?
  • Catastrophizing: Do you expect the worst possible outcome in a given situation, blow problems out of proportion and imagine the most dire consequences?
  • Overgeneralization: Do you tend to draw sweeping conclusions about yourself, others or the world based on a single incident?
  • "All-or-Nothing" Thinking: Do you have a tendency of seeing things in black-and-white terms, regardless of the complexity of situations?
  • Mind Reading:
Do you often think that others hold negative opinions/judgments about you, even if there is no concrete evidence?
  • Emotional Reasoning: Are you prone to believing that something is true solely based upon your feelings?
  • Should/Must Statements: Do you set rigid/unrealistic standards for yourself or others and feel guilty and/or frustrated when these standards are not met?
  • Mental Filtering: Are you likely to focus on the negative aspects of a situation, while filtering out the positive aspects?
  • Disqualifying the Positives: Do you often reject positive experiences, achievements or feedback by insisting they "don't count"?

Do any of these apply to you?

Negative thinking woman looking sad

Negative thinking is frustrating especially when it turns into a self-perpetuating cycle:

  • This happens when pessimistic thoughts lead to negative emotions, which, in turn, reinforce and intensify the negative thinking patterns.

Negative thinking can have a huge impact on our lives, including:

Stress & Anxiety

Constantly dwelling on negative thoughts can contribute to heightened stress and anxiety. Catastrophizing and expecting the worst can lead to a continuous state of worry.

Depression

Persistent negative thinking is closely linked to depressive symptoms. Over time, a consistently negative outlook can contribute to feelings of hopelessness, sadness, and a lack of motivation.

Impaired Decision-Making

Negative thinking patterns may cloud judgment and lead to impaired decision-making. Fear of failure or expecting negative outcomes can hinder one's ability to make choices with confidence.

Social Withdrawal

Believing that others hold negative opinions/judgments can lead to social anxiety and withdrawal. Negative thinking may contribute to feelings of inadequacy or a fear of rejection.

Impact on Physical Health

Prolonged stress arising from negative thinking can have physical consequences, as chronic stress is associated with various health issues.

Low Resilience

Negative thinking can diminish resilience and the ability to bounce back from setbacks. Individuals who consistently focus on negative outcomes may struggle to adapt to challenges.

Strained Relationships

Constant negativity can strain relationships. Negative thinking may lead to pessimism, irritability, and a lack of emotional availability, impacting the quality of interpersonal connections.

Low Self-Esteem

Negative self-talk and self-criticism can erode self-esteem over time. Negative thoughts about one's abilities or worth can create a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Procrastination & Avoidance

Negative thinking can contribute to a fear of failure or perfectionism, leading to procrastination and avoidance of tasks. This can hinder personal and professional growth.

Impact on Goal Achievement

A negative mindset can undermine efforts to pursue and achieve goals. Believing that success is unattainable or that setbacks are insurmountable can create self-imposed barriers.

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural state that we go in and out of many times a day. It is a state of relaxation, focused attention, and heightened suggestibility.

Think daydreaming, having creative insight, being absorbed in a book, movie, or program, an emotional response to advertising, losing track of time…

These are all classic examples, and we actually pass through hypnosis when falling asleep!

Hypnosis is a consensual state, meaning you have to want to go into hypnosis for it to occur.

It is important to understand you are fully in control and have the capacity to come out of hypnosis at any time, and even reject suggestions if you want to.

No one can make you do anything against your will.

What you will find though, is that Samantha’s Sessions are so pleasant, so relaxing that you want to enjoy them over and over again! And we welcome you to do that!

What is hypnotherapy?

Simply put, Hypnotherapy is therapy within the state of hypnosis.

The terms Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy can be used interchangeably.

Clinical Hypnotherapist & Counselor Samantha Jones will take you into hypnosis & guide you throughout your journey towards positive thinking.
